How does mustard yield versus canola?

In 2022, a trial was done at Outlook, SK where AAC Brown 18, AAC Yellow 80, and Liberty Link 233P were grown under irrigation. Yield results for all 3 varieties were comparable. See Condiment Mustard Development for more details.

What is the difference between AAC Brown 18 and AAC Yellow 80?

AAC Brown 18 is a hybrid variety of Brown mustard (Brassica juncea) and is brown seeded. AAC Yellow 80 is a composite variety of Yellow mustard (Sinapis alba) and is yellow seeded. Plant Breeders' Rights has been granted for AAC Brown 18 and has been applied for in the case of AAC Yellow 80.

What is a hybrid? Why should I use a hybrid?

A hybrid is the product of a cross between genetically unlike parents. The seed produced by crossing fertile male plants created from one parent with sterile female plants created from a second diverse parent. The hybrid seed produced has been selected for heterosis or hybrid vigor such that certain characteristics (i.e. yield) are superior to both of its parents. Hybrid mustard has many benefits, the main one is an increased yield over open-pollinated varieties. Consistently AAC Brown 18 has yielded at least 19% greater than Centennial Brown. Other benefits of the hybrid include increased biomass accumulation, quicker emergence and ground cover, which can help the crop's competitiveness with weeds.

What products can be used for weed control?

Growers can use:

Authority for kochia control in all mustards
Edge can be used in yellow mustard for broad leaf control
Clethodim for grass control
Muster Toss N Go in brown and oriental mustards
Quinclorac in brown and oriental mustards
Trifluralin in all mustards.

Follow label instructions on all herbicides used on mustards.
